15 Best Shows Like Doom Patrol

[ad_1]

DC’s Doom Patrol follows a group of people who used to have bright futures ahead of them until they went through terrible experiences that left them with strange new powers. Many shows utilize the premise of a group of misfits trying to get through the day despite extraordinary happenings, but Doom Patrol is special for its brilliant performances and unique characters.

A major theme throughout Doom Patrol is the characters trying to face their issues and the main villain of the series. Doom Patrol is a great superpower show, but it is also a fantastic character show, and there are many other series that emulate its greatness.

UPDATE: 2022/11/28 22:30 EST BY SHAWN S. LEALOS

Doom Patrol is back in December 2022 with its fourth season. For fans of DC Comics superheroes, this is great news because there is nothing like this show on TV and there are no superheroes as strange and eclectic as the members of Doom Patrol. With all the changes in Warner Bros. right now, there is no telling how much more fans will get from this brilliant comic book series. The good news is there will be at least four seasons, and if anyone wants something similar to watch when Doom Patrol is gone, there are plenty of great options, both in superhero and fantasy shows and outside the genre.

She-Hulk (2022-)

Tatiana Maslany in She-Hulk Attorney at Law

There has been a big complaint that all Marvel shows and movies share a similar template. If there is one show that broke that monotony, it was the Disney+ series She-Hulk. Unlike regular Marvel shows and movies, with a hero battling a villain and saving the city or world, this was a show about an attorney who also happened to be a Hulk.

What really helped the show stand out was She-Hulk breaking the fourth wall and even revealing she knew she was in a TV show. With Doom Patrol in the comics referencing DC Comics, She-Hulk approaching the filmmakers at Marvel fits right into that dynamic.

Peacemaker (2021-)

Peacemaker and Vigilante standing back to back

Fans of DC have another eclectic show to catch on HBO Max, and one that received even higher praise from critics and fans than Doom Patrol. The show starred John Cena as the Peacemaker, a character introduced in the movie The Suicide Squad. While Peacemaker was a villain in the movie, he had his character fleshed out in the series.

Just like Doom Patrol, the series Peacemaker has some very bizarre characters, including a wannabe vigilante known as Vigilante, a diminutive ninja named Judomaster, and a white supremacist supervillain known as White Dragon. A second season is on the way.

Legion (2017-2019)

Stream now on Hulu

David Haller looking on in Legion.

While Doom Patrol is a superhero show that blurs the lines of reality, it really doesn’t even reach the level of the Marvel series Legion. With Noah Hawley as the showrunner, Legion took a character who is the comic book son of Professor X and created something TV superhero fans had never seen.

The series focused on David Haller, a man diagnosed with schizophrenia who meets a strange girl in a psychiatric hospital. That is when he learns he really has superpowers, and that is where the series goes completely off the rails.

What We Do in the Shadows (2019-)

Another show that broke the fourth wall was the mockumentary fantasy series What We Do in the Shadows. This is not based on comics, but it is based on vampires and brings the same level of self-awareness to that genre that Doom Patrol does with comic books.

The FX series is based on the mockumentary movie produced by Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement. However, it surpassed that movie and remains one of the funniest and most brilliantly written shows on television.

Invincible (2021-)

Stream now on Prime Video

Invincible flying in the comic series

For anyone looking at something similar to Doom Patrol but in an animated format, look no further than Prime Video’s Invincible. In this series, a young man takes on his role as a superhero. However, he has to find his way in a world where his father was considered one of the best in history.

There are plenty of twists and turns, and the other heroes and villains are unusual, peppered with aliens from other worlds. This is a show that is R-rated, so prepare for that, but it is smartly written and a great follow-up for fans of Doom Patrol.

The Boys (2019-)

Stream On Amazon Prime

Amazon’s The Boys examines superheroes in a completely different way from the usual Marvel and DC movies. These superheroes are genuinely terrible people, portrayed as shallow celebrities that abuse their power and terrorize people more often than they save them. Most superheroes on the show are corrupt, especially the arrogant and intensely violent Homelander.

The Boys is a breath of fresh air in the superhero genre, bringing social commentary such as the examination of “girl power” in the media, and allowing its characters to critique their goody-two-shoes counterparts. The Boys themselves are unconventional protagonists as well, fueled by revenge and questioning the world around them.

Preacher (2016-2019)

Stream On Amazon Prime

Another Amazon series, Preacher is a supernatural adventure show based on a comic book, much like Doom Patrol. The main character Jesse Cluster is a heavy-drinking preacher who becomes convinced that he can literally find God, and he sets out to do just that. There are tons of mysteries to unravel in the show, and fans will enjoy spending time with its unconventional characters.

With lots of gore, a unique sense of humor, as well as a star-studded cast, Preacher is tons of violent fun, allowing its characters to be vulnerable, relatable, and bizarre.

The Umbrella Academy (2019-)

Stream On Netflix

Eccentric billionaire Reginald Hargreeves adopts seven children with special abilities and makes them into a superhero team called The Umbrella Academy. The dysfunctional relationship between the main characters is the driving force behind much of the comedy and drama inherent in the series, which received great reviews and multiple award nominations.

The incredible cast makes this series stand out among the multiple superhero shows now available, although several critics have pointed out the many similarities between The Umbrella Academy, Doom Patrol, and the X-Men franchise.

Watchmen (2019)

Stream On HBO Max

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Watchmen, with a blue head and white eyes

A great, binge-able action show on HBO, Watchmen is similar to Doom Patrol in that both shows focus on superheroes shunned by society. Watchmen has a dark tone and follows a detective, Angela Abar, as she investigates a murder and uncovers the vigilantes operating in the shadows.

This show received multiple awards for its writing, acting, and themes of racial violence amidst the weird backdrop of superpowered individuals. The incredible story is unique and intriguing, with intelligence and sincerity at its heart.

Harley Quinn (2019-)

Stream On HBO Max

Harley and Poison Ivy from the Harley Quinn series

This animated show is more than a hidden gem, following the adventures of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy – AKA Pamela Isley – after Harley’s breakup with the Joker. The series is animated in a colorful cartoon style but is still wickedly funny, violent, and straight-up gory. The dark tone matches the DC Cinematic Universe but also contrasts this show against many other superhero cartoons.

Harley forms a team of baddies including Ivy, Clayface, King Shark, Doctor Psycho, and Sy Borgman, to prove that she is a competent villain. Each of these characters faces personal struggles, like the characters of Doom Patrol, and despite being villains, they must use their friendship to overcome them.

Loki (2021-)

Stream On Disney+

Knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is required to understand this show, as it focuses on Loki, the brother of Thor, as he is brought to the Time Variance Authority and tasked with fixing the timeline, saving it from a great threat. The show features many interesting and zany characters such as the animated character Miss Minutes and the Loki variants, who bring a touch of humor and drama to the series.

Loki becomes more of an anti-hero than a villain in this show, although he is still mistrusted by many people, much like the heroes who were shunned from society in Doom Patrol.

Titans (2018-)

Stream On HBO Max

Fans were initially hostile towards the Titans TV show, but the show seems to have won over some fans with some absolutely iconic quotes and memorable characters, earning mostly positive reviews for its first season.

The show features Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and their leader Dick Grayson in a darker and more violent version of the beloved Teen Titans cartoon. Grayson rejects his original Robin persona and takes the mantle of Nightwing, trying to figure out who he is as well as keep his team safe. Titans has a different continuity than Doom Patrol, but some characters are played by the same actors in the two series, such as Negative Man and Elasti-Girl.

The Tick (2016-2019)

Stream On Amazon Prime

The invincible superhero The Tick combats crime and tries to expose a mysterious supervillain with the help of his sidekick, Arthur, a nervous man that was traumatized by the villain as a young boy. The brilliant humor and realistic plotting make this show an easy watch, but its low viewership meant that the show was limited to only two seasons.

The Tick shares its outlandish premise with Doom Patrol, as well as the sense of mystery at its heart. Arthur may just be imagining The Tick, and the balance between good and evil is at the center of every character’s decision.

Misfits (2009-2013)

Stream On Hulu

The sci-fi comedy-drama Misfits follows a group of young people doing community service when they acquire superpowers during a thunderstorm. Each of their powers relates to their struggles in some way, for example, Curtis acquires the power to rewind time as he is trying to escape a moment in his past that ruined his Olympic career.

The characters are less than heroic, but most are likable and easy to root for, as the series has a unique sense of humor and charm. However, some audience members were let down by the uneven writing of the series, which often encompasses outlandish plots that make little sense.

Daredevil (2015-2018)

Stream On Disney+

Daredevil follows Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a child and now serves as a lawyer by day and the superhero Daredevil by night. Daredevil shares similarities with Doom Patrol, such as having a cast of less-than-heroic protagonists and featuring crossovers with other hero franchises, like Teen Titans for Doom Patrol and the Punisher for Daredevil.

The main villain of the first season, Kingpin, is an absolute beast and portrayed wonderfully by Vincent D’Onofrio. Elektra’s inclusion was met with mixed reactions, but the series featured some ridiculously cool action sequences to make up for the lackluster storylines.
