House of The Dragon Season 2 Filming Start Date Revealed (& It’s Soon)

House of the Dragon season 2’s filming start date is reportedly revealed to be this March, just two months after bringing home a Golden Globe.

With still a year to go until its expected premiere, House of the Dragon season 2’s filming start date has been revealed, and it’s very soon. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel, the series acts as a prequel to HBO’s beloved Game of Thrones adaptation, set approximately 200 years before and primarily focusing on the downfall of the House Targaryen, culminating in the iconic event known as the Dance of the Dragons. Developed by Martin with now-sole showrunner Ryan Condal, House of the Dragon proved to be a smash hit for the network upon its August 2022 premiere, setting the record for HBO’s most-watched series premiere with over 10 million viewers across both the cable channel and HBO Max while also garnering the highest finale viewership since Game of Thrones‘ series finale and beating The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to become the most-pirated series of 2022.

As revealed by the Film & Television Industry Alliance‘s Production List, House of the Dragon season 2 will begin filming very soon. The second chapter of the hit Game of Thrones prequel series is set to get back to filming on March 6 in both the United Kingdom and Spain. Interestingly, the production listing also reveals that House of the Dragon season 2 will see Game of Thrones vet Alan Taylor returning to direct at least one episode of the new season.

Everything We Know About House of The Dragon Season 2

Given the very secretive nature of the show, few specifics have been shared about what’s to come from House of the Dragon season 2, though the cast and creatives have offered some insight. Showrunner Ryan Condal has teased that the show will run for multiple seasons and explore everything from the Targaryens leaving Old Valyria to them regaining power while losing control of their dragons. Star Milly Alcock has noted that while she has not heard anything official about her potential return, the door is open for both young Rhaenyra and Alicent to return for season 2, though Condal has confirmed that the new season will feature none of the infamous time jumps from season 1.

Writer Sara Hess has offered some exciting tidbits for what’s to come in House of the Dragon season 2, including a further exploration of the relationship between an adult Rhaenyra and Matt Smith’s Daemon. Speculation has swirled regarding the incestuous union thanks to the overall Game of Thrones timeline that would lead to Jacerys, Lucerys and Joffrey claiming the Iron Throne in the future, believing their marriage would correct the bloodline. Hess also confirmed that the iconic “Blood and Cheese” storyline from the books, which saw the Targaryen and Hightower families engage in a war of attempted “son for son” assassinations by the eponymous duo following Aemond killing Lucerys, will be adapted for House of the Dragon season 2 and will not disappoint, potentially rivaling that of Game of Thrones‘ “Red Wedding”.

The majority of the cast are expected to return for House of the Dragon season 2 alongside showrunner Ryan Condal, now the sole boss of the show following Miguel Sapochnik’s departure, citing personal reasons for his exit. While rumors have swirled of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ Elizabeth Olsen and The Witcher‘s Henry Cavill being cast for the season, both have debunked said reports. With House of the Dragon season 2 set for a March filming start date, the Game of Thrones prequel is in line to make its 2024 release window.
