There’s a big mystery about Captain Marvel’s activities between her first movie and Avengers: Endgame, but The Marvels probably can’t solve it.
The Marvels will reunite the audience with Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), but it can’t solve the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s big Captain Marvel mystery anymore. Carol Danvers made her MCU debut in Marvel’s Phase Three as the studio began to lean more into this universe’s cosmic side, and even though there were already female superheroes in the MCU, Carol became the first one to get her own solo movie.
Captain Marvel took viewers to the 1990s to meet Carol Danvers, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who, after an accident, was presumed dead and was taken by the Kree. As Carol was exposed to the energy of the Tesseract, the Kree turned her into a Kree/human hybrid and wiped her memory. Carol eventually learned the truth and sided with the Skrulls in their battle against the Kree, and became the hero now known as Captain Marvel. Carol returned in Avengers: Endgame, but there are many gaps in her story that need to be filled and were expected to be in her sequel movie, but given the movie’s new approach, the MCU can no longer solve Captain Marvel’s biggest mystery.
It’s Unknown What Captain Marvel Has Done Since The 1990s
After overpowering and defeating Yon-Rogg (Jude law), Captain Marvel left Earth to help the Skrulls find a new homeworld and left Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) with a modified pager so he could contact her whenever he needed. As mentioned above, Captain Marvel returned in Avengers: Endgame after getting the emergency message from Fury, who by then had vanished as a result of Thanos’ snap, but the movie didn’t explain where she had been since the 1990s, only mentioning that she dealt with various conflicts on multiple planets. Avengers: Endgame made the mystery of what Captain Marvel does when she’s not on Earth even bigger by having her leave the planet again in 2023, only mentioning that she had been assisting other planets with crises similar to those of Earth post-snap.
Before the concept of The Marvels was revealed, it was expected that Captain Marvel 2 would fill in those blanks and show or at least explain what Carol Danvers did between the event of Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, and maybe even what she did in other planets after the blip, as well. This might not be possible anymore given the plot of The Marvels, which will ultimately hurt Carol Danvers, as no matter how popular and interesting she is as a person and superhero, she’s still a mystery to the audience as many parts of her life haven’t been explored or shown yet.
The Marvels Might Not Explain What Captain Marvel Has Been Doing
The Marvels won’t just be about Carol Danvers but also Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and WandaVision‘s Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), so there’s a lot to cover. The Marvels will see these three heroes swapping places with each other every time they use their powers, so they will join forces to figure out why. In addition to that, Monica hasn’t been seen since the events of WandaVision, where after Scarlet Witch put an end to Westview, Monica was approached by a Skrull regarding an intergalactic mission, implying that Carol sent her. The Marvels is already covering a lot, and there might not be room for explaining what Captain Marvel did since the 1990s and between the blip and the Battle of Earth, thus continuing a big MCU mystery.
