Are you a teenager staring at your comb in shed-induced panic? When hair fall starts early, it feels like an alien experience. You don’t know what’s happening, and the stress only makes it worse.
I went through the same thing. Today, at 30 years old, I can finally look back and understand exactly where I went wrong. Here is my journey from hostel-room experiments to finding a permanent solution.
The Hostel Struggles: Cold Weather & Wrong Choices
When I was in 10th Grade, I lived in a hostel in Shimla. It was freezing for six months of the year, and being away from home, I had no one to guide me. Because it was so cold, I used very hot water to wash my head.

I developed what I thought was just “dandruff.” I panicked and tried every commercial bottle on the shelf—Head & Shoulders, Clean & Clear, even Beer Shampoo. When those failed, I listened to seniors and slathered my scalp in oils—Bhringraj, Kesh Kanti, Coconut, and Almond oil. I even shaved my head 5–6 times, thinking the hair would grow back thicker. Nothing worked.
1. The Breakthrough: It’s All About Gut Health
The biggest lesson I’ve learned in 15 years is that hair health is a reflection of your gut. In the hostel, my diet was poor. I thought I was getting “nutrition” because I ate eggs, but nutrition is a vast science. My gut was sluggish and toxic.
- The Fix: If your digestion isn’t clear, your hair won’t grow.
- The Ritual: Start incorporating Curd (Probiotics), Kanji, or Triphala Churan into your routine to detox your system.
2. The “Shastra” Method of Hair Washing
I used to wash my hair daily to ‘wash away’ the dandruff, but this only damaged my scalp further. While we all want quick results, it’s important to understand the biological limits of how long hair grows in 1 week to set realistic expectations
- Frequency: Wash your hair only 3 times a week.
- The Best Days: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are considered the optimal days for hair washing.
3. Stop the Oil, Start the Science
If you have active dandruff, stop applying oil immediately. Oil acts as food for the fungus that causes dandruff. Instead, use medical-grade solutions for 2–3 weeks to reset your scalp.
- The 90% Success Formula: Look for shampoos containing Selsun (Selenium Sulfide) or a combination of Ketoconazole + Zinc Pyrithione. These are the only two that consistently work for most people.
4. The Morning Ritual: Blood Circulation
By stimulating the scalp with back-combing, you provide the nutrients needed for long-term health. Over time, you’ll notice a significant difference in your hair growth rate by age, as younger follicles tend to respond much faster to these rituals.
-
- Neem Wood Comb: Switch to a wide-tooth comb made of Neem wood. It’s naturally anti-bacterial.

- Reverse Combing Technique (Nape to Front): Gently comb your hair in the reverse direction — from the nape (back of your head) towards the front. This slight “pulling” sensation helps stimulate the scalp and increases blood circulation to the roots.
5. The Ultimate Natural Shampoo Recipe
Patience is key. When you switch to natural methods, don’t expect a mane overnight. Tracking how long hair grows in a year will show you that consistency pays off more than expensive ‘miracle’ products.
Ingredients:
- Amla, Reetha, Shikakai, Bhringraj
- Multani Mitti (Fuller’s Earth), Hibiscus, Amarbael Powder
- Optional: Ratanjot Powder (if you are dealing with premature greying)

Preparation:
- Mix these into a 2kg container. Ratio Tip: Keep Reetha at double the quantity of the other ingredients (2:1) for better lather.
- To Use: Soak 2–3 tablespoons in water overnight.
- The next morning, add more water to make a full mug.
- Place a wide basin under your head and pour the mixture over your hair. Catch the liquid in the basin and pour it over again 2–3 times. This ensures the herbs truly penetrate the scalp.
Summary
If you fix your Gut Health and follow these natural rhythms, your existing hair will become incredibly healthy and strong.
